A companion hunting from the middle stand about 200 yards away shot a small buck and had to retrieve it after dark during the rut. While recovering the animal he heard loud repeated grunting nearby that he did not believe was deer and could not see the source. He became frightened, dragged the deer about a hundred yards to the gate, and waited urgently for pickup.
