A man in the mountains on the B.C. mainland reportedly watched an animal rip open a log to collect insects and grubs. He then saw it throw the insects into a creek to attract fish. The animal then scooped trout onto the bank to eat.

A Coast Salish elder told the guest that as a young boy south of Nanaimo he found a small hair-covered creature sitting on a cedar fence railing by a beach river. When it saw him it jumped down, put a hand in front of its face, and ran into the forest. The elder called it Steamtum.
