As teenagers, the witness and her boyfriend parked in a dirt cul-de-sac in a wooded park to spend time together. They heard heavy footsteps, snapping twigs and rustling circling them in the dark but could see nothing. When they drove away, the witness looked back and saw a tall, broad, long-armed silhouette step into the light under a street lamp, prompting them to flee. She later heard that a woman's mutilated body was found in the park, after which the park was placed under a nighttime curfew.

The father heard a low constant growl approaching that he first mistook for an airplane, and the family dogs fled. The father ran to the house, and firing a shotgun in the direction indicated by a young relative in the house.
