A man hunting small game claimed a tall, fully hairy figure walked across a dirt road near Skilak Lake. The figure paused, looked in his direction appearing surprised, then left swiftly into the woods. The witness watched from a few hundred yards away in daylight, loaded his shotgun because he was unsure of intent, and later chose not to tell authorities for fear of disbelief.

After midnight they heard branching breaking and multiple bipedal-sounding runners circling camp in the dark, fired rifles without effect, found the dog terrified in the tent and felt something touch a tent, then saw large shadows in firelight. They packed out carrying the dog while being followed down the trail, with one silent individual flushing very close, until reaching the car.

The witness was on a multi-day hunting trip on a mountain ridge above the treeline, using binoculars and a scoped rifle to look for bears. From 80 to 100 yards away the witness observed a large gray short-haired cat-like animal with prominent upright ears crouched on a rock, moving its head like a predator. The animal sensed the witness, moved its ears, then crept backward and disappeared. The witness chose not to shoot because the animal could not be identified.
