He fled toward approaching headlights, fell down a drop to the road breaking his collarbone, and was picked up by a passing couple who took him to a ranger station.

The creature charged to the water's edge about 15 feet away, stopped when the witness raised a paddle and yelled, stared again, then walked back into the woods, leaving the witness physically ill and anxious for weeks.
