The witness, young daughter, and small dog walked an unlit road through wetland to the water. After ice-breaking triggered a heavy thud on one side, the return ice-break triggered overlapping whoops with chatter on the other side. The daughter then reported a large black man-like figure crossing the road ahead and staring at them; no tracks were found on frozen ground.

For about 45 minutes they heard heavy branch-breaking and something moving along the shore paralleling their boat from about 20 yards offshore. His partner dismissed it as elk, but the size and single-animal character stuck in his mind and rekindled his interest in the subject.
