Late at night the witness heard loud walking with dragging footsteps downhill near a path and, with a parent, approached and fired shots without deterring it. They later staked out the area, heard weird noises, and smelled a foul odor. The next morning they found human-like footprints sized to the witness's foot and groups of bent and broken trees.

The witness joined a small group for an overnight camp to practice outdoor skills. In the evening the witness walked east of camp, noticed a strong foul smell and heard vegetation breaking nearby before running back to the group. The group then packed and left the area.

The witness group was camped in a Sierra County campground and walked to an outhouse at night with a small flashlight. The witness shone the light toward the outhouse area below the trail and saw two red eyes that appeared to crouch down, then quickly returned to camp. A foul odor noticed around the outhouse lessened when others checked shortly after, and the next morning the group found small uprooted trees and no odor, estimating the eyes had been 7 to 8 feet off the ground.

A man walking in the woods to shoot his rifle reported smelling rot and then seeing a huge hunkered animal staring at him. After a few seconds of mutual staring, the man walked away and the animal bolted past him on two legs, breaking branches as it ran. The account was relayed secondhand by a friend who said the witness was frightened and stayed out of the woods for months.

The witness and his wife sat on his truck tailgate at a power-line clearing late at night when they heard snorting, brush breaking, and a loud growl/grunt moving up a steep hill toward them. The witness saw a large shadow moving on the slope in moonlight, heard breathing and stomping, and smelled a musky sour odor. After revving the truck engine the sounds crashed rapidly downhill, and the pair left, seeing deer run across the road as they drove out.

The witness was bow-hunting in coastal second-growth forest on the morning of 9/1/01. He heard whooping and scream-like vocalizations followed by a large tree falling, plus heavy footsteps, and later found large ground impressions, broken limbs and tops, and animal hair high on a tree. An investigator later reviewed photos of broken and twisted trees and received frozen scat and hair samples for examination.
Gold dredgers have afternoon encounter in Cherokee National Forest
Two men had finished dredging for gold and were talking when they noticed a large dark creature about 100 feet away partly behind a dead tree and tailings pile. The creature reached up and snapped off a tree limb, looked at them for 10 to 20 seconds while a strong smell was present, then turned and walked into the woods. They stayed in the area for two more weeks with no further sightings but reported smelling it several times.

After the fire died the witness lay in the tent and heard loud breathing approach, stop behind the tent blocking moonlight, shuffle the cooler, then sniff at his head. While fishing, the witness noticed a very foul odor, then heard sounds like something striking a tree, followed by a high-pitched howling/scream-like sound and more tree-striking sounds. Feeling watched and unnerved, the witness left the area, and on the trail out noticed fresh broken branches on a pine tree.

The witness and a companion camped in Wayne National Forest over a holiday weekend. After mimicking animal sounds in the evening, the witness stayed awake through the night hearing crashes, footsteps, grunts and mimicking speech, and saw eye shine high off the ground. In the morning the pair found a snapped tree, strong odor, widely spaced ground marks and a five-toed partial print, which the witness attributed to a large visitor.

While on night patrol, the witness responded to a companion's report of something standing by trees behind a building and shone a spotlight into the woods. A very large upright hairy creature holding a branch was seen, which then dropped the branch, looked back with red eyeshine, screamed, and ran away with a strong odor left behind. The witnesses later found a large pine branch torn from about nine feet up.

The witness and a companion were parked in a truck at a mountain road landing late at night and watched a wild boar rooting in snow. After the boar fled, an upright figure appeared at the tree line, stood over the boar's spot, and was then illuminated by high beams. The figure blocked the light, showed glowing eyes, grunted, crossed the road in three strides, grabbed a sapling and disappeared uphill, leaving a strong odor.

The witness and three companions were sitting by a dying campfire late at night when a dog ran back into camp frightened. They then noticed a tall shadowy figure just beyond the firelight that turned to face them, showing eye reflection and a strong foul wet-animal odor. After staring for under a minute, the figure ran upslope through brush breaking branches, while the group shouted and then kept the fire up all night.

They heard something moving toward them and fled to a moonlit clearing where they saw a bipedal creature they first called a bear. In later years they found broken trees and footprints they attributed to the same creature.

The witnesses estimated the taller figure at 7.5 to 8 feet tall, hid at the fire tower overnight, and noted broken limbs and a sweet unpleasant odor in the area the next morning.

The witness drove to rented pasture to check fences where cattle had been getting out. He found a large tree knocked through the fence with strange hair on the wire, moved the tree and repaired the fence, then found very large fresh footprints in mud near a creek. He heard a grunt near the repair site and later a high-pitched scream from the same direction, found items tossed from his truck bed, then left and did not return.

The witness and a companion were camping at night when they heard something heavy climbing the bluff toward camp. They fled to the truck and drove slowly past the camp entrance with headlights on. A tall, hairy biped stepped into the road, stared at them, then walked away on two legs. They found larger-than-human footprints and disturbed ground the next day.
