Gov-connected snake researcher describes daytime encounter in Pine Barrens swamps
The witness and a companion hiked into a remote swamp-surrounded ridge to survey snake habitat. While the companion stepped away, the witness heard bipedal footsteps and branch snaps from the swamp below and called out with no response. The witness then watched a dark upright figure move between trees for several seconds before it disappeared. Both left the area quickly.

In fall 2007 five young men walked into semi-dense woods at night and noticed a strong foul odor. Brush began shaking violently and with flashlights they saw broad shoulders moving through vegetation, then noticed something running down a hill and a large fallen tree that had been moved from its prior position. As they left the valley they again heard movement and saw a crouched figure shimmying through thick brush before fleeing the area frightened.
Possible intimidation in the Pine Barrens
The witness visited a pine forest site three times in the early morning. On the first visit he heard heavy footsteps retreating, smelled a skunk-like odor, and saw a rock thrown into water. On later visits he heard loud repeated calls and low moans, heard footsteps approach to within about 15 feet without seeing the source, had a large stick thrown near him, left food and recorded vocalizations, and noted indistinct footprints and large broken trees.
