Three companions were gathered at a pond bonfire late at night when one walked back toward the house alone with a shotgun. He reportedly saw eyes staring down at him off the trail, shouted, then fired all six rounds at close range before fleeing in fear. Later the reporter heard a single very loud prolonged scream from that area followed by total forest silence, and a brief morning search found almost no blood and no clear prints.

While home alone recovering from a badly rolled ankle, the witness lay on his stomach on the living room couch and became paralyzed yet mentally awake. He felt intensely cold hands forcefully hold his legs and cut under his toes, while hearing movements on the wood floor. Upon fully waking and checking the house, he found no one there but later saw large missing chunks of skin under his toes.

The witness drove into the mountains near Shaver with his dog for a day hike to clear his head. About fifteen feet away a reddish female creature stood up from behind a manzanita bush while a large black male charged down from about two hundred yards away. The witness covered his dog in a fetal position until the male stopped close by, then tossed an apple which the female grabbed and ate whole before both walked toward the ridge. Afterwards he found a reddish puddle of blood behind the bush and left quickly.
