After waiting, he continued on an overgrown trail and heard something pacing him about 15 feet away though nothing was visible. The woods went silent, then something close by laughed like a hyena, and it followed him until near the mountaintop.

Scream near Cherokee, North Carolina
The witness heard a baby-like crying sound near his property, then about ten minutes later a very loud, long, deep roar from a mountain about half a mile away. Shortly after, an answering roar came from the top of his own mountain behind him. The two roars went back and forth, shaking his RV, and he went inside with his dog.
