The witness was staying overnight at a forested campground when they heard four loud howls from about a mile away between 4 and 5 a.m. Each howl lasted a few seconds and was spaced minutes apart, with distant dogs barking afterward, and the sounds stopped at dawn. The witness first thought the sounds could be wildlife or a person but later felt they matched a televised Sasquatch howl recording described as deep and ape-like.

After shouting and firing a pistol shot, they heard a grunt and running footsteps, then fired repeatedly and drove off the mountain the same night.
