The witness was hiking above the dam at Deadwood Reservoir when he noticed movement uphill about 60-70 yards away. A reddish, bulky bipedal animal stood, looked toward him, then walked quickly uphill out of sight. He also heard deep grunting, left camp early, and said the encounter challenged his prior skepticism.

Two hikers about one half to one mile from camp saw an upright figure watching them from behind a large tree about thirty yards away. The figure swayed briefly then ran away on two legs and disappeared into darkness after about 200 feet. The witness and a companion were walking back to their campsite at night when they stopped on a small bridge over a stream. They watched a fur-covered figure crouched at the water's edge drinking with its hand. The figure stood to at least eight feet, stared at them without blinking for a minute or two, then resumed drinking as the two left in fear.

The witness was camping with other groups and took a nighttime walk on a dirt road after being unable to sleep. About 200 yards from camp a large grey entity emerged from the roadside 10-15 feet ahead, turned to face the witness, and they made eye contact for a few seconds. Both turned away, the witness ran back to camp and kept watch, with no further appearance.

In late August 1973, two companions setting up a hunting camp at night heard loud screams, whistles, and brush thrashing around them and retreated into their truck cab. The witness then shone a spotlight toward the sounds and saw an erect, dark brown-to-black biped move rapidly up a steep rock slide on two legs. The witness later felt the animal had no intent to harm them.

Four people were parked in a car on a double date east of Payette Lake at night. A companion warned that something large had circled the car and was now in front of it. When the headlights were turned on, the group saw an upright figure covered in dense black fur standing at the edge of a clearing about 15 feet away. After a second or two it spun on its heels and ran into the woods.
