Strange vocalization heard while calling for a kitten on the Wabash River

Late at night, the witness and two companions were searching near a campfire for a lost kitten when they heard a single loud, unfamiliar scream-howl from nearby. The sound lasted several seconds and was followed by several minutes of responses from cattle, coyotes, and birds along the river. The witness, who reports familiarity with local wildlife sounds, stated the initial vocalization did not match any known animal.
