A group camping overnight in a wooded campground heard a very loud, close vocalization that began as a growl and shifted into a prolonged howl. Frightened by the unfamiliar sound, the group retreated to their vehicles for safety. Years later the reporter concluded the sound resembled televised alleged Sasquatch calls and did not match black bear sounds.

Man recalls hearing strange howls while camping in High Point State Park
The witness was camping with two young siblings near a lake when they heard a loud prolonged howl from a hillside at dusk. The same sound was heard again closer after dark and a third time very loudly in the middle of the night, waking them. The witness did not see the source and years later associated the sound with alleged Bigfoot howls heard on television.
