Campers describe loud branch snap, howls, and possible track, northeast of Cougar
The witness and a relative camped overnight beside a creek after scouting the area for hunting. Around 10 p.m. a loud nearby branch break woke them, but a flashlight search revealed nothing. An hour later distant howls woke them again, with further responses heard after the witness howled back, and footsteps were later heard near the tent. Next morning a single large deep footprint was found near the tent and photographed.

The witness was camping with two companions at Peterson Prairie Campground. Around 2:30-3 a.m. all three were woken by a very loud, long drawn-out scream/howl that shifted from higher to lower pitch. The sound was described as very close and repeated three times.
Backpacker hears multiple vocalizations while camping near Trout Lake
The witness was camped alone on the second night of a three-day backpacking trip in Gifford Pinchot National Forest. At about 2:30 a.m. he was awakened by three consecutive whooping yells followed by a loud three-second guttural scream from up the valley. He then heard very faint distant answering calls or howling. He stayed awake for a couple more hours and heard nothing further.
Elk hunter hears loud screams at night near Deadman's Lake
The witness backpacked to Deadman's Lake for a one-night stay during elk season. Before dark he heard a distant howl, then at about 11:24 p.m. he was awakened by a loud high-pitched screaming howl from the meadow next to his camp. He opened the tent with a light and camera but saw nothing and did not hear the sound again, though nearby owls called afterward. In the morning he searched and found only elk and no unusual sign before packing out as weather turned.
Campers Awaken to Unknown Vocalizations, Brush Popping and Foul Odor
About 2 a.m., dozens of campers were awakened by loud prolonged screams from the woods east of the campground. Six campers entered the woods with flashlights toward the sound about 200-300 ft from the perimeter, smelled a foul odor and heard loud brush movement and wood cracking, then retreated. The screams lasted 20-25 minutes total, fading to the east with a similar sound from the south, followed by coyotes howling.

The witness was camping with family and woke between 3 and 4 a.m. to a high-pitched howling/screaming that started with one voice and grew to several in unison before stopping abruptly after 10-15 seconds. The witness's wife also woke and heard it. The witness said the sound was unfamiliar and unlike elk, deer, cougar, or coyote known from prior experience.

The witness and a companion were camping overnight at a campground. Around 3 a.m. the witness was awakened by extremely loud howling that continued for many minutes and was also heard by the companion. Later the witness alone heard the howling shift into loud ape-like chattering, then heard howling again near dawn after coyotes sounded.
