Strange, large animal seen at night on a rural road near Auburn

Late on a summer night the witness was riding in a car with three companions on gravel roads near Auburn, Iowa. A very large black-haired animal crossed the road in front of the car in the headlights, clearing the road in one to two steps. The witness described an arched back, odd strides, rear-bent legs and a vaguely dog-like face, and estimated it was taller than the vehicle and larger than a horse.
