Two men report powerful vocalizations behind neighborhood

Two people talking in a residential driveway at night heard an extremely loud, deep howl/growl/moan echo across the valley three times over about one to two minutes. Dogs in the area barked and the witness's dog then shivered and stared toward the hill behind the house before retreating to its doghouse. The witnesses felt frightened and said the sound was unlike known local wildlife. No source was seen and no further sounds were heard that night.
