The witness was driving alone at night on a highway through the Black Hills when a large dark biped stepped over a guardrail onto the road very close to the car. She saw its shoulders, chest and legs beside the passenger side before it disappeared into darkness behind the vehicle. Frightened, she did not stop and immediately called her fiancé about what she had seen.

The husband heard brush movement across a ditch and then saw a hair-covered figure from the chest up watching them from 20 to 30 feet away. After watching for several minutes, the couple slowly left uphill while the figure continued to observe, and the wife also saw it as they left.

In a few seconds she noted its body was level rather than sloped, its legs were distinct without belly skin, and its lighter-colored hairless-looking face without a snout turned sideways to look at her. She heard nothing because the radio was on, and found no sign at the site the next day.

Late at night they heard prolonged bark-like screams from two directions, then encountered a tall hairy figure at close range with a flashlight. After hearing movement outside and seeing a large head at the window, she opened the front door, turned on the porch light, and came face to face with a tall hair-covered figure. Her middle sister arrived and ran toward the figure, which then left and quickly disappeared. The sisters did not discuss the incident at the time and only recalled it decades later.
