Bow hunter describes close encounter at dusk from his tree stand near Grain Valley
The witness was deer hunting alone from an elevated stand at dusk when deer behaved nervously. A large unseen animal approached behind the stand, breathing heavily, sniffing, producing knocks and screams, and pacing before moving west. The witness turned on a headlamp and saw a tall dark figure from behind that grunted and ran along a creek bank into the woods.

While deer hunting at dusk, the witness shot and field-dressed a deer and then started to leave. An unfamiliar, terrible scream began nearby and continued for about five minutes, getting louder and closer until it seemed to reach the gut pile. From about 200 yards away, the witness hurried out of the woods and now avoids the area.

Four young men drove late at night to find a reputedly haunted mansion and nearby infant grave. Two of them approached an iron-gated house that appeared well-kept and spoke with a very old woman in historic clothing who held a candle and gave directions using wagon trails. After hearing loud infant crying at the grave site, they drove past the house again and found it dilapidated and overgrown, though the woman with the candle could still be seen inside. The group fled and never discussed the night together again.
Close encounter while fishing remembered near Giant City State Park
The witness was fishing alone at a small wooded lake in the afternoon when brush breaking, snapping trees, and splashing rocks drew attention. The witness turned to see a large muscular creature standing nearby that emitted a loud high-pitched scream. The witness froze, the creature quickly retreated into the woods, and the witness fled down the trail to the vehicle.
Scream near Jackson County
An avid outdoorsman fishing at night with his wife heard screams from the back end of a lake in Jackson County. He abandoned tackle, rods, chairs, lanterns and a grill with catfish cooking, fled with his wife in the truck and never returned. He later moved counties away and cried recounting the event.
