The witness and their son watched the sunset at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway and then got into their car to leave as fog rolled in. As they started to back up, a very dark, man-like figure ran across the road into the woods. The witness described it as too large for a black bear and not an elk, said it disappeared from view, and said they were left intensely frightened.

The witness reports hearing repeated knocking sounds at night over multiple seasons from spring 2013 through spring 2014. The knocks reportedly occurred in the evening, about a minute apart, lasting 30 minutes to a couple hours, with nothing seen. As the witnesses walked back toward camp, they heard a single long, echoing primate-like call from the dark woods in the direction the deer had stared. The witness later compared it to a gibbon call but with more body, and said he had never heard anything like it despite extensive time outdoors.
