The witness was camping with extended family in multiple tents when awakened after midnight by rhythmic tapping and footsteps moving around the tents. A dog in camp whimpered, and relatives in another tent reported footsteps, heavy breathing, and two individuals apparently communicating before one screamed. The witness and his father exited their tent within seconds and saw nothing. Around 4 a.m. the camp again heard rocks clicking and chattering from dense woods about 50 yards away.

A rancher riding on horseback to check cattle reportedly saw a large, dark-brown, furry, upright creature walking on two legs. The witness claimed long familiarity with bears and insisted it was not a bear. When the creature realized it had been spotted, it turned and ran uphill into a steep, tree-lined canyon. The incident was dated to about 1950 and was retold decades later by a local who had heard the story lifelong.
