Three backpackers waited out a storm below tree line, then continued hiking out toward the trailhead near sunset. As they crossed a logged clearing they heard thrashing and a howl, then saw a massive dark biped run through brush about 60 yards away into the forest. After hearing another distant howl from the opposite direction, they left the area quickly.

The witness was camping with two companions on a forest research trip and the group howled at the moon from a hill. Something at a distance howled back very loudly and could not be identified as a known animal. The group stayed awake in separate tents through the night and left the next day without further incident.
