While on a camping trip, the witness hiked off trail at night to set snares for food. He heard rustling and sounds of bipedal footsteps paralleling him and reported seeing a tall shadow behind a tree that vanished under direct light. A large branch landed near him, prompting him to fire a flare gun as a warning, after which something large crashed away through brush sounding like a heavy person running with long strides. He returned to find his companions asleep and did not report the incident until later.

On a sunny spring morning in 2011 the witness was walking a trail beside a swampy area when he heard a whistle-like sound followed by loud smashing and crashing in the woods. In fall 2007 five young men walked into semi-dense woods at night and noticed a strong foul odor. Brush began shaking violently and with flashlights they saw broad shoulders moving through vegetation, then noticed something running down a hill and a large fallen tree that had been moved from its prior position. As they left the valley they again heard movement and saw a crouched figure shimmying through thick brush before fleeing the area frightened.

Four people camped overnight along a trail in the New Jersey pine barrens heard an odd high-pitched scream for about ten minutes late at night. They also heard something large moving through thick brush about 20-25 yards away, pausing at intervals as it passed the campsite, but dim light prevented any visual identification. The sound eventually faded away and the group did not investigate that night or the next day.

When the witness was 14, he camped alone in a forested area and noticed something in the brush paralleling him as he returned to camp near dark. The presence circled the camp and later approached the tent, producing an extremely loud scream followed by growls and chatter, then retreated after the frightened witness yelled back. The witness was camping overnight with a large scout group near a lake when a large pot of food disappeared from camp. Throughout the night the group heard bushes thrashing, repeated tree knocks, and loud long whistles coming from different sides of the camp. Counselors kept everyone by the fire until daylight, when another scout group helped them leave and police were called but reportedly found nothing.
