On a Saturday night in winter the witness was at the family farmhouse with relatives. Over several minutes he heard distant tree knocks that seemed to approach, while dogs barked and horses were agitated, followed by a creaking sound and a loud metallic pop during an outdoor check. His daughter separately heard a low moan outside a bathroom window, which she first thought was the witness.

The witness and two companions went squirrel hunting on a hillside near a shooting range south of town. Something large crashed down the hill to the tree line, beat its chest and gave a loud chimpanzee-like screech while shaking trees and breaking branches. The group hid together in a ditch expecting an attack until the sounds stopped and the woods went silent. The witness recalls intense fear and has little memory of leaving the woods that day.
