He heard an unusually deep throat-clearing sound, then about 20 minutes later heard two rocks land near the tent with loud thuds. Shortly after, he heard drawn-out whoop-like calls coming from multiple directions around camp. He remained in the tent overnight and left after sunrise without checking for sign.

On two consecutive nights the witness heard loud deep whooping calls, first from the valley below and then much closer to camp, with wood-on-wood-like banging the first night and coyotes falling silent. On the second night the witness left the tent with a rifle and light and heard something large and heavy crashing through timber with loud footsteps, then stood guard until morning and left early without telling the children.
