Around mid-summer 1982 or 1983, the witness and a companion were camping in a wet cypress swamp in Lee County after dark. After building a campfire, they heard a single deep, drawn-out scream from the swamp less than a mile away, after which insects went silent. The witness and a companion were fishing at night under a river bridge when they found a fresh human-like track in the mud. They then heard loud roars ending in screams, heavy movement and thudding from across the river, had rocks thrown toward them, and heard splashing and grunting as they left. At the truck they found river mud spattered on the vehicle with a strong foul odor.

The sound moved rapidly downriver for several minutes, fading to a deep growl, while the adult dogs whimpered and the family became terrified. The father packed up camp that night and drove the family home, and the family later felt the sound matched a purported Sasquatch vocalization heard on television.
