The witness backpacked to Deadman's Lake for a one-night stay during elk season. Before dark he heard a distant howl, then at about 11:24 p.m. he was awakened by a loud high-pitched screaming howl from the meadow next to his camp. He opened the tent with a light and camera but saw nothing and did not hear the sound again, though nearby owls called afterward. In the morning he searched and found only elk and no unusual sign before packing out as weather turned.

Two rocks were then thrown from the woods and narrowly missed her as she hurried away. Near a bend in the road she heard a loud low growl followed by a scream and fled running. Late at night a resident went onto the porch after the outside dog became highly agitated and heard continuous loud shrieking screams, which the spouse also heard. The next morning footprints were found in deep snow leading across a field toward the forest with long strides, and a second set was reported to join the first in the woods. Photographs of the tracks were said to have been taken.
