They fled downhill toward their vehicle while using an air horn, heard a loud guttural whoop near the car, and reported being followed for several miles.

The witness was alone in a tent at camp while elk hunting and trying to sleep. He heard an unusually deep throat-clearing sound, then about 20 minutes later heard two rocks land near the tent with loud thuds. Shortly after, he heard drawn-out whoop-like calls coming from multiple directions around camp. He remained in the tent overnight and left after sunrise without checking for sign.
