A witness and a relative were carrying camping gear to canoes in the afternoon when they heard an extremely loud bellow followed by muffled talking-like sounds. The witness retrieved a shotgun and moved toward a river point while the relative watched from the canoes. The witness heard heavy footsteps and brush movement heading toward the rapids but saw nothing, and found dry crossing rocks with no splashing. He concluded whatever made the sounds must have leapt rock to rock to cross.
Strange, loud animal howls heard by resident near Gnesen
The witness stepped into the yard on a Sunday night and heard frantic dog barking and wolf howling overlain by loud, prolonged wailing unlike any known animal. The wailing source held position briefly then moved rapidly northeast around the lake, causing underbrush disturbance and loud ice crushing before falling silent. The background animals also fell silent, then erupted again minutes later without the wailing resuming.

The group returned together, heard knocks nearby, and one companion briefly chased the sound before feeling lured away. That night they heard a loud splash near their island camp, and at dawn found a very large wet footprint by their canoes before leaving the area.

From across the bridge they heard loud screams and howls that grew closer, along with crashing and breaking branches. Believing something was approaching them, they ran back to the truck, locked the doors, and drove away.
