Retired Police officer hears whoops on Lake Zoar/Housatonic River, Sandy Hook CT

Late one July evening the witness opened a back sliding door to let the dog out. About ten seconds later two loud roar-like sounds, each about three seconds long and ending in a yip-like rise, were heard a few seconds apart. Nothing was seen and nothing else was heard.
