The witness was night-fishing along a river trail when heavy footsteps approached on the wooded hillside. Shining a headlamp toward the sound caused it to stop, and it resumed after the light was removed. The footsteps paralleled the witness back to the parking area without ever emerging, and a search with a brighter light revealed nothing seen or smelled.

About two weeks before reporting, the witness was walking along Highway 17 at night to and from a store. Late at night the witness heard loud walking with dragging footsteps downhill near a path and, with a parent, approached and fired shots without deterring it. They later staked out the area, heard weird noises, and smelled a foul odor. The next morning they found human-like footprints sized to the witness's foot and groups of bent and broken trees.

The witness and three young companions were swimming at a creek when the companions ran past telling the witness to run. The witness looked back and saw a large hairy figure leaning on a tree by the creek. The group fled up a steep railroad embankment, then heard something charging up behind them pushing pines aside, so they escaped down the other side through briars and vines.

While on a solo night escape-and-evasion march at Fort Jackson, the witness stopped at a fire-lane crossing around 2 a.m. in total darkness. Something approached, moved away after being challenged, made growling talk-like sounds, then approached again before crashing away through brush. Startled, the witness ran and eventually reached another soldier with a fire and truck.
