On opening day of elk season the witness camped alone on a remote spur road after hunting all day. After dark he struck a tree with a limb, then heard a large tree pushed over upslope, primate-like yells and chatter from both upslope and the ravine below, and heavy footsteps. Unnerved by the sense of being surrounded, he packed up and drove out without seeing anything.

The witness was hunting elk with a muzzleloader several miles north of a ski area as snow began to fall. From a small canyon he heard chimp-like huffing and chattering that seemed to come from three individuals on both sides of the ravine. He tried to see the sources as the sounds kept moving ahead with him but saw nothing, then returned to camp as the storm worsened and daylight faded.

The witness was lying down to sleep at home in the early morning when a series of loud vocalizations was heard from nearby woods. The sounds included a distant deep call, loud siren-like screams, and chattering with tongue-clicking, while neighboring dogs barked during parts of the sequence. The sounds faded and returned as if the source moved deeper into the woods and back before leaving for the last time.

Around 3 a.m. the witness was awakened by extremely loud howling that continued for many minutes and was also heard by the companion. They heard leaves and branches breaking and screaming from all around them and smelled a strong foul odor they did not recognize. Unable to see anything in the darkness without a flashlight, they grabbed their rifles, threw their bags in the car, and left.
