The witness and two companions hiked into rugged forest to camp overnight for turkey hunting. Late at night they heard a prolonged unfamiliar howl, and a few hours later heard slow heavy footsteps approach within feet of their tent before withdrawing when spoken to. The next morning they found a large scat pile uphill and then left the area.

While turkey hunting in the morning with a relative, the witness used a turkey box call. A nearby loud howl that turned into a roaring scream answered the call, followed by two more distant replies farther up the canyon as the call was repeated. The pair moved toward the first sound but saw nothing in the scattered pines.
