The witness and two companions camped in the Mt Hood National Forest with a barrel of animal entrails intended as bait. Over three days they reported loud screams from a nearby ridge, nighttime wood knocks, heavy steps and snapping twigs, and found their camp table apparently bitten through. They moved the bait pile away from camp, later found most of it missing with a wet sweet dog-like odor at the site.

On Monday evening 5/14 around 9pm at a relative's riverbank house, the relative noticed a roughly 9- to 10-foot limb protruding from the ground that had not appeared in panoramic photos taken earlier that day. The husband arrived shortly after, felt uneasy and heard rustling in the woods across the river before turning back, and the witness later joined him to inspect the stick and search for footprints without success. The relative suggested the limb may have fallen from a tree, while the witness doubted a natural placement.

Investigators found fresh broken trees, dozens of footprints and two nests where a trail crossed a road and staked out the spot. No creature was seen, but something large moving on two feet approached the stakeout before fleeing downhill through brush when a car passed. The sign was documented the next day with footprint and tree-break measurements and a body-length impression in one nest.
Loud vocalizations repeatedly disturb family
The witness, then a child, was sleeping in the family's A-frame when very loud, high-pitched screams from behind the house woke the household. The father fired a handgun from a loft window and later used a spotlight, hearing something move away upslope but never seeing the source. Similar late-night screams recurred several times over the following week, and daytime searches found broken small trees and a rotten-egg smell but no tracks or other samples. The family moved away within a month.
