Howls in September, 3AM, from marsh south of Steilacoom, due west of McChord AFB
The witness and a companion were sitting on a screened-in porch with coffee before leaving for the airport. They heard loud calls starting as a whoop and transitioning into a prolonged anguished howl-like cry, then heard similar calls from farther away over a couple of minutes. Both were shaken and unfamiliar with the sound despite experience with regional wildlife.
Possible knocks and vocalization heard from inside a home near Buckley
The witness was awake in bed with the window open around sunrise when two wood knocks sounding very close were followed immediately by a distant deep vocalization. The witness felt the sound was too deep and guttural to be a human, elk, coyote, or other familiar animal. The witness then got up, closed and locked the window, and heard no further noises.
Couple camping at a lake near Greenwater experience possible screams
The witness and a companion were camping at an isolated lake over a long weekend. On Saturday morning they began hearing very loud guttural scream-growls that seemed to warn them away from certain areas, including the path to the lake, and the sounds continued into Sunday. Overnight they heard cooking gear clanging and a heavy thump like logs dumped beside their trailer, but in the morning the gear was largely in place and no logs were found, and the companion also reported a strong putrid smell.

The witness had pitched a tent for the night off a forest road while traveling home and was awake reading inside the tent. He heard a long shriek/howl followed by multiple short bark/grunt sounds lasting about 90 seconds in total. His dog woke for the final seconds and stared into the darkness, and the forest had gone silent just before the calls, which he judged to be about a mile away.
Teenage girl and her younger sister chased out of the woods near Greenwater
During a daytime rock-hunting outing, the witness and her younger sister walked down a trail past a creek. Something charged toward them from a wooded hill, crashing through vegetation while emitting a terrifying howl/growl, and the witness glimpsed a black figure. Both girls fled back to their group in tears and left the area immediately.

In summer 1982 the witness was hiking with five relatives down a forest trail near Mt. Rainier after finding a wood carving vandalized. The group heard heavy pacing footsteps in the woods that stopped when they stopped walking and resumed when they walked. They then heard a loud howl described as having two simultaneous tones, after which the whole group ran to their vehicle and drove away.
