The witness was camping alone in a wilderness clearing next to a river when he heard a loud repeated knocking like a thick stick hitting a tree for a minute or two. He hid by the river to look upriver for the source but saw nothing. Afterward he crossed the stream and found only beaver-chewed trees, which he initially thought explained the noise.
