YESTERDAY (09/01/2024): Hikers hear chatter and whoops of a large animal in Founders Grove, 33mi SE of Eureka
The witness and a companion were hiking the Founders Grove loop just after sunset when the woods went quiet and they heard chattering vocalizations. They felt immediate dread and judged whatever made the sounds to be huge. As they retreated toward their vehicle they heard movement in brush going deeper into the woods, and when the witness whooped back the chatter answered again. They hurried back to their car.

The witness reports waiting alone at dusk at the gated entrance to a remote conservation area when they heard a very loud unfamiliar wail/scream-like call from a wooded slope a few hundred meters away. After additional calls and a pause, a second similarly loud and unfamiliar call answered from a different direction a few hundred meters away. The witness interpreted the exchange as communication between two large unknown animals and doubted a prank due to the remoteness and solitary 45-minute wait.

The witness stopped on a park bridge after work and felt uneasy and watched from the wooded riverbank. A large log crashed into the river nearby and was seen floating, followed by a low huffing sound, though no creature was seen. The witness inferred the log had been thrown from the forest floor and left quickly feeling scared and shaken.
Two campers hear creatures calling throughout night near Bluff Creek
Two brothers camping at Onion Lake heard loud, rough grunts lasting about a second from multiple directions around camp, apparently answering each other from about 9 p.m. until about 5 a.m. A deer ran into camp after the first grunt and several deer stayed close to the tent all night. Despite searching with a spotlight the witnesses saw nothing and heard no movement through brush, and found nothing the next morning.
Campers Hear Unusual Evening Sounds
Two campers spent a rainy night at a campground after noticing a skunk-like odor on arrival. Through the night they heard ape-like hoots, single-note whistles, repeated wood-on-wood whacks from several directions, heavy two-legged footsteps, and nearby rockslides. They saw nothing in the dark and left the next morning, noting the steep bowl-shaped hillside could carry sounds from far uphill.

Late at night while awake alone at the kitchen table, the witness heard a loud vocalization that started as low resonant yelling and rose into high-pitched screams. She said she recognized the sound from family descriptions and was thrilled to finally hear it after visiting the region for many years.

Two companions camped under a large pine beside a mountain dirt road after their car slid near snow. After dark in the tent they heard grunts, loud breathing and bark crunching as something large circled the tent on two feet. After firing shots from the tent and finding nothing outside, they later heard a long loud high-pitched scream some distance away, then slept until morning and found no footprints in the bark.
