Possible pre-dawn vocalization heard by hunter near Ferrum
The witness arrived in darkness to hunt deer from a tree stand on private land. While sorting gear in the stand, a very loud prolonged scream-howl ending in a growl occurred at close range, followed by movement in a nearby pine thicket and a brief foul odor. The witness stayed in the stand until first light, then left, and later visits had no further incident.

Resident describes possible vocalizations near Robertsville
The witness returned after being away for a week, parked near the barn late at night, and walked toward the house. From the immediate right the witness heard a hair-raising guttural growl twice and hurried inside to tell family. The next morning the witness called the conservation office, where the person consulted said the described sound was definitely not a bear.
Growl
