A counselor later told them it was a bear, which the witness doubted because it walked on two legs and was in a swamp.

The witnesses returned the next morning but found little sign due to overnight rain.

The family continued uphill without further sound or sighting and later reported the encounter to park staff.

The witness reported a large amount of dust in the air at the spot where it left the embankment.

The witness and a companion had made camp for the night off a trail. While standing on the trail smoking, the witness saw a large dark upright form that was first mistaken for a person on a bicycle. After calling to the companion and looking back, the witness saw it move quickly into the woods on two legs. No trace was found the next day.
