While riding as a passenger on a late-night highway drive from Texas toward Colorado, the witness saw a small white-haired upright figure with a dark face standing beside the road in the headlights. Minutes later after stopping, the driver independently said he had also seen something white and furry behind them. The two agreed the figure had two legs and was not a coyote, but they left without investigating because a sick companion needed to get home.

Viewed through binoculars, it appeared as a single tall, dark, hairy animal with very long arms and stride that moved downhill into trees in seconds. They heard sloshing in the water and later saw a large figure run across the road ahead of the headlights and heard heavy steps in sagebrush. Using a spotlight they glimpsed a tall dark primate-like figure cross in front of a large boulder and enter dense timber.

The creature was initially bent over and first taken for a bear, then stood erect and looked at them, provoking intense fear. The pair later returned with photographers but found no trace.

In summer 1971 the witness and two companions found about a dozen very large human-like footprints crossing remaining snow patches in a high alpine meadow in a Colorado wilderness area. The prints were described as well-detailed, much larger than a large human foot with a stride of four feet or more, and were judged not to be bear tracks, with no prints visible on firm ground between snow patches. The witness noted possible enlargement by summer melt and refreeze and considered a hoax unlikely due to remoteness, and left the area frightened.

Three elk hunters walking back toward camp heard a loud crash and chased what they assumed was a bull elk to the rim of a deep, steep-sided canyon. From across the canyon the reporter watched through a rifle scope as a tall, black-haired biped ran up the opposite slope on two feet and briefly turned to show its face in profile before entering the trees. The group chose not to pursue closely, later backtracked the trail toward the highway, and examined broken vegetation and footprints the following day.
