Trout fishermen encounter unnerving sounds & rock throwing in Joccasee Gorge
Three college roommates hiked to the Thompson River to fish and camp overnight. After dark they repeatedly heard a childlike crying sound from a nearby ridge, had small river stones tossed into camp, and later heard loud knocks alternating with the cries. At daylight they hiked out, noticing concentrated scat and disturbed ground near oak trees, and concluded the activity was not from a person.

Two friends squirrel hunting in a fenced former fox-training woods noticed total wildlife silence, then a foul odor, then a loud roar accompanied by a large pine falling in the distance. The ground shook when the tree hit and they fled to the grandfather's farmhouse. The grandfather laughed and used a local term for a wild hairy creature.
