The witness was canoeing alone on the river in the afternoon and had to pull out to drag the canoe around a log jam. He smelled a terrible odor and was paced by something unseen that stopped when he stopped, then heard screaming, breaking limbs, and saw a large log thrown and trees violently shaking. He fled in the canoe to the center of the river.

The brothers were hunting deer from a blind with two younger companions when a shot deer could not be found. After splitting up to search a dense thicket at dusk, the group reunited and heard a loud sustained scream from close range at head height. After firing a shotgun into the air, they saw the moonlit outline of an upright human-like figure running toward the water's edge while making an unfamiliar howling sound. A search of the immediate woods the next morning found nothing unusual.
