A girl camper ran to the boys' side overnight saying she saw an ugly black face peering in the bathroom window. The children first thought it was a joke but she appeared terrified. The next day the group found large muddy handprints with an oddly offset thumb on the outside wall under a high small window.

In the late 1970s in December, the witness's friend found a short line of very large barefoot humanlike tracks in mud along a strip-mine pond while running traps. The prints showed five toes and a stride the finder said was too great for him to match. A local friend who swam in the turnaround where alligators would not go searched underwater and found an opening. He swam about 100 feet into a cavern, surfaced under the area used for bikes and horses, and encountered an overpowering stench that burned his eyes and made breathing hard. About a week after the first sighting, gunshots were heard from the nearby horse stable. The witness rode over and learned a large creature had grabbed a wild horse from behind. The horse kicked free, jumped the corral, and fled while the rancher shot at the creature. Next day the horse showed hand-like pressure marks, not claw scratches, on its hindquarters.

The witness's father as a teenager went to a river with his older brother, younger sister, and the brother's girlfriend near dark. Something across the river crashed through brush like a heavy animal, then yelled, screamed, broke branches and pushed things over. The group fled in a vehicle, realized they left the youngest sister, drove back and found her running up the road screaming.

Two men running dogs without guns approached strange barking at a fence. A creature stood up, blocked their lights with a hand, then followed them through cornfields to a field edge before turning back. Next day footprints and a handprint were found in creek mud and trailing dogs refused to follow.

Two lifelong friends were target shooting with small-caliber rifles along a river while a nearby reservoir was filling and flooding caves. After one rifle jammed, they returned to their car when they heard limbs snapping and saw small trees swaying and breaking. They circled back to the riverbank clearing and came face to face with a hair-covered creature standing on a deadfall, which one of them shot multiple times in the chest. The creature fell silent, then revived and ran one way while the two men fled the other, later tracking it and sparking local monster lore.

A deputy sheriff responded to reports from local residents about footprints in Leland Meadow. The deputy reported finding hundreds of tracks in the snow, described as 15 inches long with a 5-foot stride. No casts were made, but the find was reported in the local newspaper.
