Around 2-3 a.m., the witness and one companion awoke to very loud, distant, deep howling that lasted about 15 minutes. They had not heard the sound before and ruled out cougar and elk, tentatively considering a bear but finding it too loud for a bear at that distance. No visual contact or physical evidence was reported, and the sound was heard on only one of three nights at the site.

They threw rocks to scare it off, but it did not flee, and the companion's dog barked then whimpered. As they packed up with truck headlights on, they heard the movement recede then return closer with heavier footfalls, and small rocks were thrown toward them.
