The witness was tent camping near a lake with children who remained asleep. Around 2 a.m. the witness heard a series of angry, howl-like calls with a deep growl undertone lasting about 10 minutes. The witness, familiar with local elk and owl sounds, did not believe those animals made the sound.

He heard three loud bellowing screams from one end of the valley that vibrated through the trees. After they faded, three nearly identical loud screams answered from the opposite end of the valley, which he interpreted as two creatures communicating.

After turning on lights the witness saw eyeshine from the creek, lost it, then later saw two pairs of eyes on the far bank that turned and moved away.

Late at night the witness and a companion at home heard loud roaring scream patterns from across a small lake that they judged non-human and primate-like, appearing to respond to barking dogs and move along the shore. About three minutes later they heard a violent scuffle with thudding, brush noise and a dog's pained yelp followed by quiet splashing. The next morning a canoe dock where the scuffle was heard was seen destroyed, and the dog was later found alive but limping.

The figure ran downhill after the deer and disappeared into brush, and the hunters later found a very large footprint where it had stood.
