He stayed in the camper the rest of the day. Years later after reading a newspaper account of tree-whacking, he concluded the sounds were Bigfoot communication.

While lying in a sleeping bag, the witness heard footsteps approach from the wooded side and saw a human-like outline shadowed in a distant campfire glow. The witness was camping with family in a wooded Oregon area near a shallow river and was playing outside a camper while two relatives napped. After hearing underbrush rustle and noticing a small sapling bend, the witness moved closer and saw a large hairy hand reach from behind berry brush to grab berries from about 8 to 10 feet away. The witness ran back to camp without seeing the rest of the creature and later described the hand as clearly a hand rather than a paw.
