Late one morning in November 1988, the witness was preparing for deer hunting at the base of a steep wooded hill before dawn when he heard a noise in a nearby thicket. The witness waited until daylight, then hunted from his stand the rest of the day, noting the woods were unusually quiet.

They experienced pebbles and rocks thrown, pacing, huffing, wood knocks, a disturbed fire pit and scattered poles. A large creature then came down the ridge into the creek, growled at them from about 20 yards, and left. A DNR officer later found prints, cast them, and called them bear tracks.

Two large hairy creatures ambushed deer on a game trail, killing two does instantly by breaking their necks. The larger creature then approached the stand, smelled the witness, looked up and vocalized loudly while touching the stand and holding a deer, then both left silently into the woods. The witness was left in shock and had to be carried back to the cabin by his father.
