Hunters have Intimidation Encounter in Southhampton Township

In December 2001 four hunters were leaving the woods along a logging road after dark when something in the adjacent swamp repeatedly screamed and charged toward them while breaking branches. The group was armed but could not see the source, felt the ground shake, and described the screams as extremely loud and frightening. After several bluff charges, the source moved deeper into the swamp and the hunters left the area.

The witness, experienced with local wildlife sounds, said it matched nothing previously heard.

While camping overnight on desert BLM land, a family member stepped outside to retrieve items from a vehicle and reported seeing a tall humanoid figure walking through a ravine in moonlight. Shortly after, two family members standing outside heard a loud growl and a dirt-scraping sound. Frightened, they ran inside the trailer, and the group remained inside for the night, later finding no tracks due to windblown sand.

While guiding two clients and accompanied by his wife on an elk hunt, the witness reported hearing a low guttural vocalization that he did not recognize as elk or bear. After moving to an aspen grove, the group heard loud repeated knocking sounds likened to logs or sticks hitting trees. The next day after snowfall, the witness returned and found a fresh cow elk carcass with its chest torn open and large indistinct tracks with a long stride nearby.

The witness was fishing on a lake in the afternoon when long, deep howls were heard from the far side of the lake. Each howl lasted about 20 seconds and was repeated three or four times from an estimated quarter-mile away. The witness stated the sounds did not match familiar local mammals or bird calls. No creature was seen.

The witness drove to a Blue Ridge Parkway overlook on Halloween night to clear his head and walked down a trail to a bench. After noticing unnatural silence and hearing branch snaps circling him, he returned to his car. While sitting in the car he heard repeated impacts like cones hitting the vehicle and saw tall black hooded figures in the treeline and prone shapes on the grass that appeared closer each time he looked away, with faint flickering lights near their faces. He spoke to them, then drove away, later finding no damage and noticing maps show the turnout on the opposite side of the road from his memory.

Three hunters were sleeping in a tent at an elk hunting camp when one stepped out around 2:30 a.m. to urinate and swept a flashlight around the perimeter. An unseen animal nearby emitted an extremely loud, long scream lasting about 10-12 seconds and fled through dense timber up a steep ridge, continuing to scream from a great distance. The sound woke multiple nearby camps and was described as unlike any bear or cougar, and no sign was found the next morning on frozen ground.

After returning to the area with his father, deer were spooked by the same sound. The witness then saw a large black-haired figure sitting under a pine about 30 yards away and stared at it before it stood and bounded away making the same noise.

Two campers collecting firewood at night heard a repeated long scream coming from deep in the valley to the southwest. The sound continued for several minutes every few seconds, changing into a broken-up cackle or yodel-like sound. Having never heard such a sound despite regular camping in the area, they relocated to another campsite for the night.

On the third night of an expedition, the witness waited alone in an elevated platform near a creek during a broadcast stakeout. Starting around 11:30 PM, he heard slow heavy footsteps pacing back and forth nearby for about two hours without ever seeing the source. After radio contact with the approaching team, he heard a loud plopping sound followed by rapid bipedal splashes moving up the rocky creek bed. A later daylight check found a boulder-covered creek with no tracks.

After exiting the vehicle in suddenly calm conditions, the witness heard steps growing louder followed by a loud repeated groaning sound. The witness froze and then left the area in the truck, later being told by another person it might have been a Bigfoot.

Two brothers were deer hunting and walking the center of a dark highway back toward town at night. Two unseen animals on opposite sides of the road screamed repeatedly, closed distance, and paralleled their movement. The witness and a companion were ending a multi-day hike and had stopped beside a logging road to dry clothes over a small fire. They heard a repeated rock-clacking sound from the forest at regular intervals for about ten minutes. Their two dogs became frightened and there was no reply when they called out. They put out the fire and left quickly, after which the sounds stopped, without ever seeing the source.

The witness was bow-hunting in coastal second-growth forest on the morning of 9/1/01. He heard whooping and scream-like vocalizations followed by a large tree falling, plus heavy footsteps, and later found large ground impressions, broken limbs and tops, and animal hair high on a tree. An investigator later reviewed photos of broken and twisted trees and received frozen scat and hair samples for examination.

The witness stopped at a rest area on Highway 26 late at night to let her dog out while driving to the coast. From the southeast across the highway she heard a sustained eerie scream lasting several seconds from a distance. She could not identify the sound as any known wildlife, and later said it matched a reference scream recording played for her.
