Vocalizations, wood knocks and strange chatter heard in the Sam Houston National Forest
In late May 2005 the witness and a companion waited in dense woods by a river after dark. After the witness imitated howls, something within about 200 yards answered with repeated loud deep growls, followed by about a minute of chattering from two directions. Later the witness struck a tree with a stick and heard similar loud banging from across the river for one to two minutes. The pair heard nothing else except insects and coyotes, and never saw the sources.

The witness was tent-camping with extended family in a lakeside marshy forest area. Late at night she and her daughter heard heavy footsteps and a quiet grunt or growl near their tent, initially mistaking it for her husband. Much later she and two other adult women in separate tents were awakened by a single loud whoop-like cry, while her daughter heard a mechanical sound but not the cry.
Predator caller has night time encounter in Sam Houston National Forest
The witness was using an electronic predator call at night when he heard an unidentified sound behind him. He shined a red-filtered light toward the sound and saw a dark animal he first took for a bear. The animal stood upright and moved away quickly on two legs while making a continuous deep, raspy growl that faded with distance.
