Hunter hears loud vocalization and is nearly trampled by a spooked Elk north of Burns
The witness and a relative were elk hunting and following two blood trails in a steep ravine at dusk. After a wounded bull ran past the witness, a very loud angry howl or growl came from the wooded hill below. The sound was described as far louder than an elk bugle and spooked horses in the area, and a strong foul odor was noted.

In July 1997 while riding a mountain bike alone, the witness heard a loud crashing noise like a large branch being broken. When the witness turned toward the sound it went silent, which the witness interpreted as something hiding rather than moving away like an elk would.
Hunters have an encounter returning from hunt
Three elk hunters walking back toward camp heard a loud crash and chased what they assumed was a bull elk to the rim of a deep, steep-sided canyon. From across the canyon the reporter watched through a rifle scope as a tall, black-haired biped ran up the opposite slope on two feet and briefly turned to show its face in profile before entering the trees. The group chose not to pursue closely, later backtracked the trail toward the highway, and examined broken vegetation and footprints the following day.
